ORGANIZED THE BAPTISTS

       CHILTON --- SPL --- William D. Gaines, one of the early business men of Falls County was the son of Joab and Lucinda McDavid Gaines.
He was born in Escambia County, Florida.  In 1866 he came to Falls County where he had a store at Rock Dam for four years, then farmed for three years before coming to Chilton where he bought 200 acres in 1874.
       He also established the first gin below the railroad track near Highway 139 in what is now Godwin pasture.
       He organized the first Baptist church in Chilton in 1883, serving as deacon, Clerk, and was the first messenger to the Waco Association.
       He married Miss Elizabeth M. Spinks of Washington County, Alabama, in 1847.  Of eight children only Mrs. Lizzie Lane of Waco survives him.
